Athlete Of The Month – December 2017

ireland

Lindsey Ireland, 33, Physical Therapist, Madison Heights

When did you start at Crossfit Reviver? : 09/02/2014

What is your athletic background?: Crossfit is the most Sporty Spice I’ve ever been in my life! I briefly dabbled in running about a year prior to joining CFR. I did a bunch of 5ks, a few 10ks, and a couple half marathons. I quickly learned that I prefer strength training over pounding the cement.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD / movement?: I love me some squats, deadlifts, and any other movement involving a barbell. I LOVE rowing. I dislike inchworms and anything involving jumping – this body is too sturdy to defy gravitational pull.

What is your greatest accomplishment? Personal, professional and fitness related. : My greatest personal and professional accomplishments are getting a full scholarship for my undergrad and graduating from Wayne State University with my doctorate in physical therapy in 2010. Physical therapy is an exciting field that is always evolving – I am a lifelong learner and will continue to take continuing education courses to advance my skills. My greatest fitness accomplishment is competing with my CFR spirit animal April Terbrack in the Festivus Games in Fall 2016. Up until that competition, I was playing it relatively safe in the gym and didn’t really push myself. Apey taught me that I am a lot stronger than I had led myself to believe (love you, lady!).

Has CFR made you better? If yes, how so? : I definitely feel more confident in myself since joining Reviver. I am much stronger physically and was able to move all of the furniture out of a storage unit and into my current home with only my dad’s help. At work, I can perform manual therapy on my patients without breaking a sweat!

What are your hobbies? : I enjoy wine tasting, cooking, traveling, and spending time with my friends and family.

What are your Top 5 favorite movies? : Step Brothers, Top Secret!, Wet Hot American Summer, Ferris Beuller’s Day Off, Labyrinth

What is one thing we don’t know about you?: I was the person who discovered Booty Bouncers on Pandora. I needed something to meal prep and clean my house to on Sundays and found it to be the perfect soundtrack. You’re welcome? 😛

What are your goals in life? Personal, professional and fitness related. : Personally, I would like to start a family. But maybe I’ll start with a pupper once my work schedule lightens up. 🙂 Professionally, I would like to continue to evolve my skills to provide the best outcomes for my patients. Fitness-wise, I want to continue to grow stronger and become more confident in myself, both physically and mentally.

fox family

Bill Fox, 44, Firefighter/Paramedic, Shelby Township

When did you start at Crossfit Reviver?:  11/20/2013

What is your athletic background?:  Like most people, sports in school. Football, basketball, and baseball. Ive stayed pretty active through my army, and fire service.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD / movement?: I love deadlifting. My least favorite is running. I hate running. Like with a passion. I would rather be on the bike than run. I only run because it’s programmed. Did I mention that I hate running?

What is your greatest accomplishment? Personal, professional and fitness related.:  Personally, I would say raising my son and daughter. They are only 4 and 7 so far, but I think they are awesome kids. Professionally goes back to my army service, and that is as a recon team leader, bringing all of my guys back to their families. We had some Purple Hearts on our team, including myself, but we all came home. To me, that is my greatest accomplishment. Fitness related is nothing specific. Just that I am impressed that I am as fit as I am at my age. I think I could still hang with the young, military version of myself, and that makes me happy.

Has CFR made you better? If yes, how so?:  Most definitely. I eat better, I move better, I feel good.

What are your hobbies?:  I am big into the outdoors. My passion is bowhunting whitetail deer. I also enjoy SCUBA diving, fishing, and just being outdoors.

What are your Top 5 favorite movies?:  The Band of Brothers series, and anything Star Wars.

What is one thing we don’t know about you?:  I don’t think most people know that I have Multiple Sclerosis. Aside from my treatments, I try to fight it with fitness and nutrition. I believe those are just as important as the medications. I don’t plan on giving into it.

What are your goals in life? Personal, professional and fitness related.:  Personal goals are to continue to raise my kids into good, functioning adults. Professionally is to make it to retirement in 9 years. LOL!! Fitness related is continue on the path that I’m on. To continue fighting my MS with fitness and nutrition, and stay in as great shape as I am as I get older.

October 2017 Athlete Of The Month

valvil

Valerie Villerot, 28, Registered Nurse (ICU), Royal Oak

When did you start at Crossfit Reviver?:  08/01/2012

What is your athletic background?:  High school sports mostly. Volleyball, basketball, softball.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD / movement?:  Favorite movement: the power clean. Least favorite: those Airdyne bikes. They are the devil’s toys. Don’t be surprised if they go missing one day.

What is your greatest accomplishment? Personal, professional and fitness related.:  Personal: Supporting my husband through Med School and now in his Residency. I know he has done most of the hard work in this, but it’s really taught me a lot of patience and understanding. Professional: Working as a bedside nurse in the Surgical ICU at a level 1 Trauma Hospital is something I really enjoy and I’m really proud of. It’s always very challenging and I’m continually learning new things everyday. It’s hard to see people at their worst moments in life, but when you can be a part of doing something good for them it makes it worth it. Fitness related: Before our wedding 4 years ago, I did a 10 lbs weighted pull-up and I’ve never been able to do it again. I think that special moment of power was from all the frustration that goes into planning a wedding.

Has CFR made you better? If yes, how so?:  CFR has already and continues to make me better everyday. I love coming to class and I’m motivated to come to class because of the great people and workouts that challenge me to be better. I’ve learned a lot about thinking of fitness as a whole picture based on my sleep/stress/nutrition levels rather than just coming to the gym and going balls to the wall to make up for the crappy foods I’ve eaten.

What are your hobbies?:  Petting our dogs, taking our dogs for walks, taking pictures of our dogs, showing people pictures of our dogs, telling our dogs I love them over and over. Things like that mostly.

What are your Top 5 favorite movies?:  Both Guardians of the Galaxy movies, both Pitch Perfect movies, About Time, and Mean Girls. Sorry that’s six.

What is one thing we don’t know about you?:  I have a mild allergy to dogs and it’s so shameful. I take Zyrtec everyday to suppress it and live a beautiful life with dogs in it.

What are your goals in life? Personal, professional and fitness related.:  Personal: Get my husband through residency and start a family with human children and not just my dog children. Professional: I like where I’m at professionally so I’d really just like to continue to challenge myself to always learn more and keep up with current research and best practices. Fitness related: I’ve never been a runner, but I signed up for the Detroit Free Press half-marathon this October with a friend and as a new challenge for myself. I’ve been training and learning to love running just a little bit, so my goal is just to continue to train diligently and be able to finish this race and not die at the end 🙂

August – Athlete Of The Month

steve

Steve Fehlinger, 65, Recently Retired, Rochester Hills.

When did you start at Crossfit Reviver? :   01/02/2016

What is your athletic background?: Worked at a gym a couple of years while in college and took a weight lifting class in college as well. I did some moderate exercising over the years and eased into CrossFit in August 2013.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD / movement?: Favorite is probably pull ups. Least favorite is running.

What is your greatest accomplishment? Personal, professional and fitness related. : Personally, raising three great kids (2 sons pictured above, and 1 daughter not pictured). All of which are college grads, successful and they stay physically active. Professionally, I have two graduate degrees and in the last several years realized I had a knack for writing. I have several articles published in professional newsletters both here in Michigan and Illinois. Fitness-wise, I completed three Murph workouts! The last one was while in physical therapy for a frozen shoulder which is currently a work in progress.

Has CFR made you better? If yes, how so? : I was less informed about the importance of mobility before joining CFR. In fact it was one of the coaches at CFR, that pointed out that one arm did not flex at the elbow completely; I was completely unaware of this. After receiving some advice from a physical therapist, I have got the mobility almost where it should be.

What are your hobbies? : Fitness, nutrition, tennis, golf, biking and posting comments in the Wall Street Journal op-ed pages.

What are your Top 5 favorite movies? : Shawshank Redemption, Search for Red October, The first God Father movie, The Wizard of Oz (there is more to this), and Ghost.

What is one thing we don’t know about you?: I have almost always had a car with a manual trans. My first four cars had a manual trans. I bought a car for the kids and of course it had a stick, so two of the three know how to drive a car with a stick. I had a hot rod mustang by the time the third one cane around, which was a challenge and lost patience with the last one.

What are your goals in life? Personal, professional and fitness related. : Personal goals are to stay fit and spread the word on nutrition. Professionally, take full advantage of reaching retirement which includes being healthy enough to keep doing what I like to do for as long as possible. Last year at this time, I did 17 consecutive pull ups, so once my shoulder gets back to where it should be, my intermediate goal is to do 20 unbroken and one at 133% of my weight. Longer term, being able to do a muscle up would be cool!

They always encourage me to push myself to take me to the next level. At the same time, they always emphasize POSTURE and the correct way of doing the exercises (It’s especially hard to go unnoticed in Sammie’s class if you are doing something wrong :p). What is your athletic background? –   Track & Field / Cross Country in HS. Marathon running & weight training throughout college & medical school. Classic move, clear benefit to daily life, should one ever be hanging moments from death. I also like power cleans, because it is a complex movement that benefits all parts of the body. If you don’t have a lot of time to work out, just do power cleans.

Danielle Baljet, 26, Rochester Hills, Registered Nurse

When did you start at Crossfit Reviver? :     10/29/2013

What is your athletic background?: I’ve dabbled in a few sports over the years. Soccer, track, and tennis in middle school/high school. These days I love to golf, rollerblade, swim, and ski.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD / movement?:  This is a tricky question. I don’t love burpees or box jumps, but I like doing them because they work so many different muscles and make me feel good afterwards. Hahaha, I tried doing hurdles in track one season and I think that’s when I realized jumping and thinking at the same time wasn’t my strong suit. I also hate wall walks because I always fall over and crash to the ground at the end, which apparently isn’t the correct way to do them. I LOVE running and cleans!

What is your greatest accomplishment? Personal, professional and fitness related. :  Oooo, greatest personal/professional accomplishment for me these days is graduating from nursing school and passing the NCLEX, making me a licensed registered nurse! Greatest fitness accomplishment would have to be doing Murph every year after almost dying during my first Murph.

Has CFR made you better? If yes, how so? :  Oh, absolutely! I used to go to the YMCA everyday and do my own workouts (which were almost the same everyday). CFR has made me step out of my comfort zone and do things I never would have tried at my old gym. AND the people here make me smile 🙂

What are your hobbies? :  I love camping, ice cream, hiking up mountains, cake, margaritas, playing board games, nacho cheese doritos, kitties, biking to sagebrush for margaritas and quesadillas, running, doing puzzles, and lots of other things.

What are your Top 5 favorite movies? :  Anything DISNEY! Harry Potter, the Italian Job, The Shawshank Redemption, Green Street Hooligans, She’s the Man, and Fight Club.

What is one thing we don’t know about you?:  I have two sisters and they are my BEST friends!

What are your goals in life? Personal, professional and fitness related. :  Personal- start eating healthier now that school stress is over! Professional- I guess find a nursing job Fitness- just to keep on, keepin’ on! (maybe learn how to set real goals for myself..)
