Athlete of the Month, May 2015
Name, age, occupation, city? Derek Gaskins, 34, President/Owner, Aleva Stores, Oakland Township
Start date at CrossFit Reviver? I want to say May 2013….somewhere around that time.
Athletic background? I was cut from the basketball team my freshman year in high school and gave up on my NBA dreams. Probably a good think since you don’t see too many 5’10” white guys in the league. I’ve skied since I could walk and was a ski instructor for several years. We have always enjoyed the outdoors and activities like golf, mountain biking, hiking, etc.
Favorite and least favorite WOD / movement? For some reason, I enjoy Wall Balls – well, as long as there are fewer than 100 in the workout. The Airdyne used to be my enemy. Never mind, it still is. Although, that and running are equally dreadful now so maybe I’m conquering the AD finally??
Greatest accomplishment? Personal, professional and fitness related? Personal: My incredibly beautiful family. I’m a lucky guy. Professional: Taking my business from a small startup in the basement of a building in Pontiac to a Top 500 Internet Retailer and Inc 5000 fastest growing company. Fitness: Completing the Wish-A-Mile 3-day 300 mile bicycle tour last year. I love what the Make-A-Wish foundation does and participating in that event was truly amazing. I plan to do it every year for as long as my body will let me.
Has CFR made you better? If so, how? I conquered my fear of the barbell. Ha! Never thought I’d be doing Olympic lifts. Seriously, though, I love what CFR has done for my overall wellness. feel better, I’m thinner, I’m stronger, I’m in less pain, I’m more conscious of my “fuel”, I sleep better…the list goes on. I’m the healthiest I’ve been in my adult life…and I use the term “adult” loosely.
What are your hobbies? Golf, guitar…hopefully, woodworking some day. Always thought that would be a nice mental escape.
Top 5 favorite TV movies? Dumb & Dumber, Caddyshack, Groundhog Day (don’t ask me why), The Usual Suspects, Escape From Alcatraz.
What is one thing we don’t know about you? For nearly two years, I studied classical and jazz guitar – even performed in a classical guitar quartet.
What are your goals in life? Personal, professional and fitness related? Personal: Be a good father and play more golf. Professional: Continue to tame this wild entrepreneurial roller coaster. Fitness: Continual improvement. I want to make sure the goals are ever-changing to ensure there’s always something to strive for.
