163 vs. 5
By: Coach J
Can we agree that 163 is greater than 5? I would hope so! But not just a little greater, like, 32.5 times greater! So if we workout 5 hours per week, and there are 168 hours in a week, why do we always look at our exercise program (or lack thereof) when trying to make physical / health changes?
I mean, I understand to a certain extent – we’ve been programmed to think, ‘if you want to get in shape you have to workout.’ And if you’re not getting the results you want, well then, ‘you should just workout harder / more often.’ But lets take a step back for a second. If you’re working out for 1 hour per day, that leaves 23 hours left over – so whats going on during those hours that could impact your health / fitness? Isn’t that where we should be digging for answers?
If you’re shaking your head yes (which I hope you are), lets ask some questions…
- What are you eating?
- How much are you sleeping?
- What are your stress levels like throughout the day?
- Are you managing your stress?
- How much joy do you get out of your work? Your relationships?
- When you look in the mirror, what do you see?
- What story are you telling yourself every day?
Sleep, Stress, and Nutrition are the big areas of your life that are going to have a far greater impact on your overall health and fitness than your few hours in the gym every week. Now don’t get me wrong, exercise / movement is crucial and very important for health and longevity, but it is not the biggest component.
If you’re struggling to get the results you want IN the gym, I suggest you start looking at what you’re doing OUT of the gym for the answers!
