Athlete of the Month- November 2019
Meaghan Barry, 31, Associate Professor, Pontiac
When did you start at Crossfit Reviver?: 2017
What is your athletic/fitness background?: I always participated in team sports growing up, and I played varsity field hockey and golf team in high school. I have always been proud that I won "Most Improved Player", not once, but TWICE: I might not be the most naturally gifted, but dang, I'll work at it! I fell off the fitness map through college and struggled to get back on: I tried Pure Barre, work-out classes at the university gym, yoga, and even ran a half marathon through the Brooksie Way training program, but nothing stuck for too long. I think I like Reviver so much because it feels a little like a team sport, which I really needed in my adult life.
What is your favorite and least favorite workout/movement?: The only "B" word I like is "barbell" and its my favorite because I really have grown in that area. I was so intimidated by anything lifting related before, so every time I pick it up, I automatically feel like I accomplished something.
All the other "B" words – "bear crawls", "burpees", "bicycling" – can take a hike off that white board.
What is your greatest accomplishment? Personal, professional and fitness related:: Personal: Feeling happy with the life I've built: marrying Fernando (aka Armani if Joe Joe is reading this), buying a house, being a dog/cat mom, having great friends/family/support system, loving what I do for work. I know I worked hard for all of it, but I feel really lucky every dang day.
Professional: Getting tenure at OU was a HUGE accomplishment. Also really proud I was selected to represent the US and the city of Detroit as a UNESCO Creative Cities delegate in Singapore this year. (Did you know Detroit is the ONLY city in the US that is a UNESCO City of Design?!) The Singaporean government flew my business partner and I across the world to talk about our work and tour their 2019 Design Week.
Fitness: Participating in Crossfit competitions! When I first signed up for Reviver, I thought I would never be strong enough or "belong" in that environment. Special shout-out to Val, April (2x), and Coach Paul, Kelsey, and Fernando (upcoming - come see us Feb 1st in Plymouth) for being my comp partners and reminding me I can do anything I put my mind and body to.
Has CFR made you better? If yes, how?: I'm definitely in better shape than ever (I recently ran a 5K FASTER than I did years ago when I "trained" for it), but really my mental game is so much stronger. I'm more confident, I'm more patient with myself and others, I feel less anxious, and I'm more consistent in every area of my life. My relationships are better (I've made some of my best friends at Reviver and convinced others to join in), my work life is better, and yes, my fitness is better.
What are your hobbies?: I'm a HUGE reader (54 books in 2018) and run a "bookstagram" with my aunt. I love traveling: last year I went to Amsterdam, Paris, Aruba, Mexico, San Diego, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Boston. As a graphic designer, I'm definitely into art, design, architecture, and anything creative. I tried a creative writing class this summer, and it really re-inspired me.
What are your top 5 favorite movies?: I'm going off script, but I much prefer bad reality tv these days to de-stress over movies. I run a Bachelor/Bachelorette fantasy league (when I'm in the off season from being commissioner of a Fantasy Football league), and prioritize MTV's The Challenge, Project Runway, and The Great British Bake-Off. Don't tell my students their professor watches such trash!
What is one thing we don't know about you?: I have my motorcycle license! When I was 21 MY MOM wanted to get hers to ride with my stepdad, so her and I got licensed together. I've got some badass, strong women in my life!
What are your goals in life? Personal, professional and fitness related:: Personal: I want to get our house the way we want it! We have an old historic home and I know it's a lonnnggg project, but man, I can't wait til we have a master bathroom that isn't the original peach color from 1937 and has all new windows someday! Thankfully, I married an architect / licensed builder!
Professional: My business partner and I are competing in the Michigan Woman Forward "Woman Up and Pitch" competition on November 19th. We have the opportunity to win $10,000 for our business. Good thing Reviver's reinforced my competitive side because I'm ready to bring home that MONEY!
Fitness: Training for my first 4-person Crossfit Competition, increasing my ankle mobility, A STRICT PULL-UP!
