Sarah Wright, 60, Social Worker, Rochester

When did you start at CrossFit Reviver?: Feb 2016

What is your athletic background?: My athletic background? Well that depends on your definition. Never played sports myself but did cheer on my brother who player in high school and my sister who was a cheer leader. When my husband was at Florida State we did pick up running and I was running 20 miles a week. But that is the extent of it.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD/movement?: My favorite is anything wall ball. My least s tied: the inch worm and the spider man stretch if that is even the name of it. Not a fan.

What is your great accomplishment? Personal, Professional, and Fitness related:: My great accomplishment was meeting and marrying the love of my life for 24 years until he became ill and is now in Heaven with Jesus. Along with that is our children, Am y and Ben and it now includes Jessica, Landon and Sadie. Professional: Studying and retesting to get my social work license after Luther died. I passed the first time. Fitness: I did Murph this past June. That was the best.

Has CFR made you better? If yes, how so?: Yes. This summer has been tough to stay on track but now we are into fall and it feels good to return to being focused. My biggest fear with joining was that I wouldn't be able to do the movements. That was before I learned about modifications. I feel like I still learn more each time I am there, including today.

What are your hobbies?: I love to sit out on my swing with my Jesus music blaring. I have a very peaceful patio. But my biggest joy is Landon and Sadie, well and Amy, Ben and Jessica too.

What are your Top 5 favorite movies?: Hope Floats-my kids are rolling their eyes right now----It's Complicated and any Hallmark movie

What is one thing we don’t know about you?: I wrote a book.  'No Liver No shoes'   Its the story of our family's journey when my husband was diagnosed with cancer to the end...which was just a beginning, really.

What are your goals in life? Personal, Professional, and Fitness related:: Personal: To watch my grand kids grow up and to be there for my family. I need to be healthy to have that be a very long term goal. I am pursing that. Professorial: 8 months ago I took a GIANT leap of faith to leave a very toxic and stressful job and now work part time with people who work as a team and care about each other. I want to help continue that course. Fitness: My mind knows what I need to do to become stronger, healthier, lose weight but my body seems to be fighting it. So I have taken steps to help myself head in the right direction. Fear stands in my way some days: Look what I will be giving up...Look what I will miss ...I'm not strong enough...There is a song called 'Fear...It is a liar'' So my goal is to recognize the lies I tell myself and focus on the joy that will come with what is gained in this process. One day at a time. One minute at a time.

Sarah Daniels, 27, Operations Supervisor, Shelby Township

When did you start at Crossfit Reviver? :    01/01/2016

What is your athletic background?:    Played volleyball my freshman year of high school & rode the bench like it was my job… aka NO ATHLETIC ABILITY.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD / movement?:    Favorite: cleans. Least favorite: assault bike.

What is your greatest accomplishment? Personal, professional and fitness related. :    Personal: Realizing that Jesus is God. It has been a long road as I am quite the skeptic. But now I KNOW I don't have to stress about covering up my inadequacies because God doesn't consider them when He evaluates my worth, Jesus suffered & conquered the consequence of my imperfections so I don't have to, and I will be in heaven, whenever my time comes. It's been a heart wrenching/challenging but adventurous/invigorating/wild ride. Professional: Being afforded the opportunity to lead a large team of people in my current role at work & introduce changes to make the workplace more efficient & life-giving. Fitness related: Being consistent in exercising multiple days per week over the past few years! I've always struggled to stay true to a work out program. It's amazing I'm still doing this two years later!

Has CFR made you better? If yes, how so? :    YES!! This is the healthiest I've been in my entire life. I've learned how to eat healthfully, what steps to take to lose fat & how to scale movements to fit my ability so I feel successful & strong. ReviveR has taught me how to properly take care of myself physically & perhaps most unexpectedly & importantly - being a part of this gym has increased my MENTAL stamina & health. Vince/Sam/Jeremy have coached me in how to set up proper boundaries at work, take uncomfortable steps to manage my stress & increase my influence as a leader, allowing me to be more effective at work & protect my energy for the relationships/tasks that matter most!

What are your hobbies? :    Reading, learning, trying new restaurants, time with friends/family, traveling, concerts (see note on Pat Benatar)

What are your Top 5 favorite movies? :    Blind Side, Dark Knight, Lone Survivor, The Town, Meet the Parents

What is one thing we don’t know about you?:    I've seen Pat Benatar in concert four times.... wasn't even trying. It just happened!

What are your goals in life? Personal, professional and fitness related. :    Personal: Ask a question to or think about God daily. Professional: Create a safe & healthy work environment in which all individuals experience God, feel comfortable to take risks, ask questions & are challenged to become the best version of themselves. I'd also one day like to mentor/guide/coach leaders on how to help themselves so they can effectively serve their teams. Fitness related: Keep moving 5 days/week & see food as fuel.

Athlete of the Month, March 2018

Sue Seaglund, 62, Mostly Retired, Rochester Hills

When did you start at Crossfit Reviver? 02/01/2016

What is your athletic background?: I grew up in an athletic household where my dad was an assistant basket ball coach at the University of Michigan. For most of my life I have participated in some kind of athletic endeavor, either organized sports or physical fitness. I’m an avid golfer.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD / movement?: My favorite WOD is one that combines cardio and strength exercises. I’m not a fan of the Assault Bike and need to push myself to get decent results (consistent RPM/cals). It’s a love/hate thing!

What is your greatest accomplishment? Personal, professional and fitness related: I’m an alcoholic who has recently celebrated 30 years of sobriety; that is probably my biggest personal accomplishment! Professionally, I enjoyed having a managerial role in General Motors’ racing programs. I was fortunate to spend time in the company of many celebrities and helped shape the racing career of NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson.

Has CFR made you better? If yes, how so?: CFR keeps me involved with young people on a day to day basis. I’m truly grateful to be able to be in the same environment working out with them and not be made to feel that I don’t belong there. CFR has improved my overall fitness by ensuring that I move properly and concentrate on form over speed.

What are your hobbies?: I enjoy reading, jigsaw puzzles, and golf.

What are your Top 5 favorite movies?: Wizard of Oz, Field of Dreams, Turner & Hooch, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption

What is one thing we don’t know about you?: I once sat on a dais with President George HW Bush.

What are your goals in life? Personal, professional and fitness related: My goal is simple and incorporates personal, professional, and fitness: Enjoy my life understanding that I serve a loving God! If I don’t lose sight of the fact that loving Him and loving my neighbor are the only things I must do I’ll be okay no matter what happens!

Sarah Carson, 25, Client Executive Specialist, Rochester Hills

When did you start at Crossfit Reviver: 03/01/2016

What is your athletic background: CrossFit with the Oakland University CrossFit Club “GrizzFit” from 2012-2015. I took a year off due to injury and jumped back in at CFR.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD / movement: This question really stumps me- my favorite movement is burpees (nobody freak out) and my least favorite movement is the bear crawl.

What is your greatest accomplishment? Personal, professional and fitness related: Personal – Marrying my best friend (hasn’t happened yet, but the countdown is on!). Professional – being selected to lead an acquisition for my company over the next several months. Fitness – To be honest, this is hard because I’ve come SO FAR. When I first started I couldn’t even do a sit-up… I’d have to say that I really am proud of initially losing 50lbs when starting CrossFit back in 2012 and being able to keep it off.

Has CFR made you better? If yes, how so: Obviously the answer is yes! CFR has helped me understand the mechanics and techniques behind the movements, which in turn, is making me a better athlete.

What are your hobbies: Reading, spending time with family and friends (including my 3 kitties), and cooking/baking

What are your Top 5 favorite movies: The Help, Remember the Titans, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, (not a movie) but all 10 seasons of Friends, and any documentary.

What is one thing we don’t know about you: My favorite animal is a penguin.

What are your goals in life? Personal, professional and fitness related: Personal – I want to have a happy family with some kiddos and cats in a loving home. Professional – I want to work in Quality Assurance which is a role within Development Teams. While my degree is Human Resources, I’ve learned that I’m more successful with the Technical aspects instead of the people aspects. Fitness – Obviously I’d love to be able to clean 150+ pounds some day, but it’s not a ‘have to’. I’m just trying to get a little sweaty, push myself a little more each day, and stay healthy with people who share that same desire.
